I'm going on a "homemade cleaner" spree.

I finally got around to making some homemade cleaners including the cloth detergent. I've been really wanting to try these recipes out since I've found them. Even though I've been couponing on great deals of laundry detergent, I really think I could be a bit more frugal on making some homemade cleaners. Plus, I wanted something less harsh chemicals since having Arianna. This would be less of what I have to spend on my coupon trips when I could be buying something else. Here's what I have done so far...

This will make two cups of detergent
I made homemade laundry detergent (which I also read this is really good for cloth diapers).

1 cup of grated soap
Directions:
1.) Grate the Ivory Soap to about 1 cup.
2.) Add the Borax and the washing soda to the grated soap
3.) Shake Well

For light load, use 1 tablespoon.
For a heavy or heavily soiled load, use 2 tablespoons.

If you have an HE washing machine, you might want to use a bit less detergent for normal and/or cloth diaper loads. Just experiment with your amounts. Start with about 1/2 of a tablespoon and gradually increase as needed to get your clothes clean. If your laundry starts to come out feeling stiff, lower the amount of detergent you are using.

Next on my list was to make homemade fabric softener. This was pretty easy.

Directions:
1.) Mix the conditioner and the hot water till the conditioner is dissolved completely. (Don't shake the bottle because it will cause it to foam. This happened to me
)
2.) Add the vinegar to the conditioner/hot water and mix it well.
3.) Store into a large container and you can use your fabric softener in a Downy ball or 2 tbsp. into your laundry machine.
4.) OR you can soak the fabric softener into an old hand towel or flour cloth completely with it. Wring it out and let it dry completely, then throw it in with your next load. This mega-fabric softener sheet should be good for at least 40 loads of laundry, stretching out softener use and lessening waste.

Thanks to The Frugal Girls for their recipes.

Stay tune for my next post on how I made our homemade window cleaner and "409" cleaner. All cheap and less harsh ingredients!
